Undertown: Volume 1    by Jim Pascoe & Jake Myler Order:  USA  Can TOKYOPOP, 2007 (2007) Paperback     Reviewed by Ricki Marking-Camuto While many adventure/fantasy manga take place in fantastical faraway places, none are quiet as unique in location as Undertown, the world dreamed up by writer Jim Pascoe and brought to life by artist Jake Myler. Sama's father is sick and the boy knows it must be his fault. When a mysterious man at the hospital tells Sama about the Sugar Stone, which can heal his father, Sama and his trusty teddy bear Eddie dive under Sama's bed and travel to Undertown. However, Undertown is much rougher than Sama could ever imagine. After the Teddy Bears were driven out, the Insurgents (a group of terrifying insects lead by The Cloud) took over the Sugar Factory and have since been at war with the Furmen. In order to find the Sugar Stone, Sama must join forces with the Furmen and help them on their own quest. Undertown is a world unlike any other. It is populated by giant insects, human-like animals, and talking teddy bears, and is powered by sugar. This is what makes Undertown stand out from other adventure/fantasy manga. Myler's artwork brings Pascoe's engrossing story to vivid detail and helps the reader connect with Sama, Eddie, and their new Furmen friends.
