In the late 1800s, a dog showed up at a post office in Albany, New York. Workers found him snuggled up on mail pouches. When no one claimed him, he was unofficially adopted by the post office and named Owney. Despite several attempts to find him a home, Owney seemed to prefer the post office, and remained the mascot for the railway mail service for many years. One day, Owney jumped on a train and ended up in the mail car, where he rode the rails, though he ended up back in Albany, much to the amazement of the postal workers. Eventually, Owney made his way across America, into Canada, and even overseas. The postmen who met Owney on his travels were instructed to attach depot tags to his collar to document where he had been. He had more adventures and traveled more than most people, and by the end of his life, he had collected an amazing number of tags. Owney The Mail-Pouch Pooch is sweet, well told, and sure to please a dog lover. The drawings are inspired, and an actual picture of the real Owney is included at the end of the book, along with an author's note.
