T
his delightful picture book offers up a twist on the traditional bedtime story. The nocturnal owl,
Little Hoot
, wants to go to bed early like his other animal friends, but the nature of owlhood requires a late bedtime.
H
is parents force him to stay up and play for an extra hour, which doesn't sit well with Little Hoot, who muses, '
When I grow up, I'm going to let my kids go to bed as early as they want.
' So, against his will, Little Hoot plays on his jungle gym, builds a fort, jumps on the bed, etc.. When his parents finally let him go to bed, he falls asleep in an exhausted heap.
L
ittle Hoot
definitely lives up to its name in the humor department. The language is witty, and the illustrations are simple but hilarious. I especially loved the pictures of Little Hoot practicing his pondering and his staring, as owls are prone to do, and the picture of Little Own learning his vocabulary at school: '
who,
' '
whom,
' and '
whose.
