T
he Rocking Chair
is one of a series of
Alligator Tales
, board book versions of the popular poems of Dennis Lee (well known for such Canadian favorites as
Alligator Pie
and
Garbage Delight
) engagingly illustrated by Nora Hilb.
M
ost little ones' rooms at least start out with a rocking chair in a corner, and this poem opens: '
I love to rock / in the rocking chair. / I rock rock rock / with my teddy bear.
' The associated picture shows a content, freckled little boy rocking with toys scattered all around. Soon the power of imagination takes boy and bear up '
in the air
', in the rain, around the block (in their underwear!), and - with other small children - '
Through the midnight air.
'
A
trio of children end up rocking themselves '
like a rocketship
' to sleep in that comforting rocking chair - as so often happens in real life at bedtime.
The Rocking Chair
is one of Dennis Lee's best.
