Somewhere there is a place where every kitchen in the neighborhood seems to have a neverending surplus of freshly baked cakes (I would like to know where this town is!) The cakes are just too tempting for Clarence, the cake thief, to resist, and so begins a life of crime and isolation from his neighbors. He is not fooling anyone, though. When he is invited to a bring-your-own-cake party, it's a test by the townspeople to see how he will handle the situation. And, rather than stealing, he learns to rely on himself and bake his own cake. After that, he never steals another cake and of course, he becomes part of something bigger than himself: a community where people share and work together, which seems to be the lesson. The book is a little quirky, with colorful and exaggerated drawings. The Cake Thief makes a nice choice for a preschool book collection.
