B
enjamin Bear Says Sorry
is the first book in Juliet David's series, engagingly illustrated by Steve Smallman. Benjamin is a
bouncy
bear who loves to have fun, but is often in such a hurry that he forgets his manners.
I
n this volume, Benjamin upsets his friends by accidentally taking off one's hat with a fishing pole, covering another in sand, and scaring a third. He runs off without asking for forgiveness. It is only when Benjamin is himself offended by someone that he realizes he forgot to apologize to his friends. He sets out to right the situation with a picnic of strawberries.
M
y only complaint about the series is the occasional use of British language that may be confusing to North Americans. Benjamin and his friends describe their picnic as
scrummy
, which I had to look up (it's a British colloquialism for
scrumptious
!) Otherwise, these are good, short stories to read to a toddler.
