On guided tours. Everybody bonjours!' So begins Leslie Kimmelman's aptly titled picture book Everybody Bonjours! The playful rhyming story tells of a young girl's first trip to Paris. Colorful pictures illustrate the text as readers follow the girl's adventures in France. She visits museums, shops in fancy stores, and attends soccer games. Everywhere she goes, whether she's snacking on crêpes from an outdoor stand or overlooking the city from a gargoyle's viewpoint atop a church, she notes that everyone says bonjour. The creative text bounces as Kimmelman writes of batter-pouring and height-exploring. She tells readers about bonjours loud, bonjours solo, and bonjours crowd. When the young girl returns home to the United States she notes that everybody hellos. Author Leslie Kimmelman has written more than fifteen picture books. This latest one was inspired by a family trip to France. Struck by the beauty of the city, Kimmelman watched as her son picked up the signature French greeting. The book also introduces young readers to some of Paris's main tourist attractions, from the Tour Eiffel to Nôtre Dame and the Ile de la Cité. While this grammatically-picky adult reader enjoyed the playful rhyming and fun illustration, the fact that bonjour is not a verb caused some awkwardness. But young readers will relate to the kidspeak and enjoy following a small girl through the streets of Paris.
