very time I think nothing new can be done with alphabet books, someone puts another twist on them, as Steve Martin has done in
Alphabet from A to Y With Bonus Letter Z!
The fun in his nonsense verses is reinforced by cartoonist Roz Chast's weird, wonderful and wacky pictures.
I
nside the covers (my favorite part) are all the grumbling letters that didn't make it into the book itself - the ones with accents, umlauts and so on. In the picture book, each letter is showcased by its own (more or less) rhyme, as in '
Yesterday Yuri the yeti did yoga, / Today he spilled yogurt all over his toga.
' Small details in the pictures also elaborate on the letter, as in advertising balloons that say '
Make more money immmmmediiately
' or 'Try
Mom's meatballs'
(for the letter '
M
', another of my favorites).
K
ids and adults alike will appreciate the goofy humor, and will probably spot hilarious new details every time they open up
Alphabet from A to Y With Bonus Letter Z!
, and take in its cockamamie recital of the ABCs (including the letter Z).
