A Grandmother for Christmas    by Chantal Dézainde & Fil et Julie Order:  USA  Can Owl, 2007 (2007) Softcover     Reviewed by Hilary Williamson The slightly goofy bookcover - in which Fil et Julie's illustration shows a benign snowgranny hugging a goggle-eyed boy - sets the tone nicely for Chantal Dézainde's A Grandmother for Christmas (translated from the French by Sarah Cummins). It all begins just before the holiday as snow falls, while Jeremy and his friend Lucy build a giant snowman (the illustration shows an impressive engineering effort!) Soon Lucy has to leave to greet the grandmother who came 'from far, far away, just to spend Christmas with us.' When Jeremy calls another friend, Theo is heading to the airport to pick up his grandmother. Jeremy decides that he needs a grandmother too - but where to get one? He sticks Wanted posters all over the neighborhood, and then wishes on the North Star. But no granny rings the doorbell the next day. Instead, after talking to his friend Theo, Jeremy writes Santa, asking for a grandmother for Christmas. Does he get his wish?
