The narrator is the elder brother Jake, who talks about his family, the birth of his younger brother Edward when he is three years old, and how special Edward is, to his brother and others. Edward has a very special eye for baseball and Jake believes his sibling 'can do anything'. More than half the book is a paean to small town family life, the kids surrounded by caring adults. Then this idyllic upbringing is interrupted by tragedy - 'On this day everything changes. It changes too fast; before anyone can say the things we should say ... Or ask the right question.' We see how Jake and his family deal with it, and with the word 'Was. / So small. / And so big.' They don't 'talk about 'woulds' or 'coulds'', but find a very special way to deal with disaster, supporting each other.
