J
ane Yolen is rapidly becoming one of my favorite children's authors (she is also the author of the
How Does a Dinosaur
series). Her books have simple and straightforward messages, and they are appealing to both adults and children.
W
e first met Baby Bear in
Baby Bear's Chairs
. Intended for preschoolers, this charming picture book sweetly conveys a baby bear's desire to grow up, but with the recognition that his parents will always take care of him, even when he is a big bear. As usual, Yolen's soothing rhythmic sentences are strung together effortlessly:
'
When I grow up in a year or three, I'll build a house in a honey tree.
And when it's time for me to eat, I'll pick some berries at my feet.
My friends will come around for tea and honey cakes up in my tree.
They'll stay and play a week or two, for that's what big bears always do.
'
M
elissa Sweet's illustrations are a lovely accompaniment to an endearing book. I know that
Baby Bear's Big Dreams
will soon become a household favorite.
