With You Always, Little Monday    by Geneviève Côté Order:  USA  Can Harcourt, 2007 (2007) Hardcover     Reviewed by Hilary Daninhirsch This sweet story follows a rabbit in his search for his mother. The rabbit is found in a forest by some other animals, and they name him Little Monday. The owl is not his mother, but that's okay because Little Monday does not think he could stay up all night. The swan is not his mother, but Little Monday is not a swimmer, so he keeps searching. He is both disappointed and relieved to find out that the skunk is not his mother.  Eventually, he sees the figure of a rabbit in the moon, and when Little Monday asks if the she is his mommy, she replies, 'I may not always be nearby, Little Monday, but I watch over you and light your way in the forest. Even on the darkest nights, even when you can't see me, I'm always with you.' The sketch-like illustrations seem a little haphazard in places, though there are some nice strokes and soft shading that lend appeal. An author's note at the end explains the significance of the word Monday and how different cultures have retold a folktale about a rabbit-in-the-moon. The book also offers children some gentle reassurance of Mommy's protective love, even when she has to be away from her child at night.
