In All Together Dead, book seven of the Southern Vampire Mystery series, Sookie Stackhouse is asked by the Vampire Queen of Louisiana to attend a Vampire Summit on Lake Michigan. Although she will be well-paid, refusal is not an option.

As well as eavesdropping telepathically on the humans there, Sookie will appear as a witness if the Queen goes to trial for the murder her king. He was killed soon after they took their marriage vows. Sookie is the only witness left alive. Queen Sophie-Anne has been weakened financially by Hurricane Katrina and she must position herself to gather new allies.

Barry the Bellboy, the only other telepath Sookie has ever met, is also in attendance. The Fellowship of the Sun, a right-wing vampire opposition group, protests outside the vampire hotel and their plans include more than simple demonstrations. Sookie's newest love, Shapeshifter Quinn, is on hand to run the summit. Sookie finds out there is more to Quinn's past than he has shared with her.

Harris pulls off a complicated mystery with her usual verve. If you haven't read any of the Southern Vampire books, start with book one. The series has a complicated cast, but you'll enjoy meeting them while you catch up to the current adventure.
