his is a story of unrequited love between a surly cat, Mr. Pusskins, and his loving owner Emily. Emily loves Mr. Pusskins unconditionally, but he constantly rebuffs her attentions.
O
ne night, he escapes into the night and joins a gang of wild cats. He soon finds out that they are not his true friends, so Mr. Pusskins roams the streets, looking into windows where cats are playing happily with their families. He suddenly realizes what he has lost.
O
f course, as in most children's picture books, there is a happy ending when Emily and Mr. Pusskins are reunited, and the cat has a change of attitude. I liked the drawings of Mr. Pusskins, with his
tough guy
expression, that is ultimately transformed into a loving, contented one at the end of the book, coinciding with his renewed love for Emily.
T
he message of this well-told story is to appreciate and treasure the love bestowed upon you and to realize that love is not a one-way street.
