Harleigh J. Weatherby, IV lives with his relatives in Weatherby House which he will one day inherit as the last descendant of the Weatherbys. Built by Harleigh J. Weatherby the First, the house is actually an enormous castle which is dilapidated and in need of repair. The once famous gardens are overgrown and unkept.

Twelve-year-old Harleigh is recovering from heart surgery. The surgery was intended to fix his health problems and allow him to grow. He is still the size of a six-year-old. Frustrated with physicians' broken promises, Harleigh decides that in spite of his poor health he will be as strong and powerful as his famous ancestor and will someday restore and modernize Weatherby House.

Uncle Edgar tutors Harleigh, which suits Harleigh well because he was teased at school and called Hardly as in 'hardly there at all.' Since the house is fenced and behind locked gates, Harleigh rarely sees anyone other than family.

One day while searching for the Weatherby garden maze, he finds a girl hanging from the bottom limb of a towering black walnut tree. She is fascinated with the mansion and the treasure she thinks is hidden there, but worried that Harleigh will tell the others about her.

Zilpha Keatley Snyder has written 43 books and is the recipient of three Newbery Honor Book awards for The Egypt Game, The Headless Cupid and The Witches of Worm. She writes great mysteries. This one is full of off-the-wall family members.
