T
his father and son picture book is unusually illustrated with vibrant hand-sewn quilts by Anna Grossnickle Hines (she explains at the back how she made them). It's night-time at the campsite and stars glitter in a clear sky. '
The air is tingly and cold
' as Daddy rouses Jake from his warm sleeping bag. He wonders if he's really ready. His dad thinks so; '
You can do it
' he says. They spot deer and a rabbit as they wait.
A
s the sun rises and the stars wink out of the sky, Jake tries, and soon he's '
softly, so softly
' whistling. As they practice together, Jake says '
Together our whistling is strong and true.
' Elizabeth Partridge has captured a precious moment, when a father teaches his son something simple, and the child is exhilerated by his achievement. The quilt pictures add an extra dimension, that emphasizes the old-fashioned value of a delightful picture book.
