The Old Testament story of Moses is lovingly retold in this picture book geared toward children of all ages, particularly first graders and up.

The story begins when the people of Israel were still slaves in Egypt, and then picks up at the time when Moses was placed in a basket in the Nile River. Hodges then explains how he ended up living in Pharoah's palace as a prince. The story in its retelling contains enough elements to keep kids intrigued: a bad guy; plagues; a burning bush; the parting of the Red Sea, and a visit to Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments. (In fact, the Ten Commandments are listed at the end, which could serve to foster further discussion between parents and children). Moses' heroism and holiness are well portrayed.

The full-page watercolor illustrations depict many biblical scenes, including Moses floating down the Nile in a basket, Moses as a young man, and Moses leading his people out of the desert. This immensely readable book is a wonderful introduction to a treasured Bible story.
