t is Epossumondas' birthday, and Mama plans to bake him his favorite dessert of strawberry shortcake, made with biscuits. However, Mama is plum out of baking soda, or, as they call it in Louisiana,

. One party guest after another goes to buy some

, but mysteriously, no one returns, thanks to a hungry Louisiana snapping turtle. Of course, as is revealed in the title, there is a happy ending.

his charming book is so chock full of Southernisms, you will be compelled to read it out loud in a Southern accent; it just won't work any other way! An example: '
Oh, my sweet little patootie saved us! Honey, you're gooder 'n' grits,
' cried Mama. Stevens rounds out the fun with her usual style of artwork: bold, vivid and detailed. This book will likely appeal most to younger children, though all ages will enjoy Epossumondas' adventures.
