A
lan Katz's offerings - from
Drinkin' at the Fountain
to
Rules, Rules, Rules
and
The Late Song
- are indeed
silly dilly
, while David Catrow's illustrations reinforce the zany humor in this subversive guide to manners. To convey the rhythms, well known tunes, like
Take Me Out to the Ball Game
(for
Don't Chew Gum in the Classroom
), are suggested for each song.
A
s a parent of messy sons, I enjoyed
Try Being Neat
(ironically to the tune of
America the Beautiful
), and including: '
Check your backpack / For last week's snack / It's prob'ly hiding there / Don't touch it, though / Because you know / Pudding should not have hair!
' (Oddly enough, David Catrow's drawing of a messy room looks exactly like one upstairs!) Another favorite of mine is
Don't Talk with Beans in Your Mouth
- but read the book and chortle over your own choices.
K
ids will love children's funny portrayal in
Are You Quite Polite? : Silly Dilly Manners Songs
, but just might learn from it to be a smidgeon more considerate of those around them.
