Some, like Eugene Field's Wynken, Blynken and Nod, are traditional, while others were new to me. It's easy to visualize the North and South Winds biting and baking in Vachel Lindsay's The Moon's the North Wind's Cookie. Then there's Roger McGough's Mrs. Moon with her 'silvery needles / knitting the night' and Mary Jane Carr's magical Shop of Dreams, 'Shop of dreams is up on a hill, / Close to the morning star'. Some are whimsical, such as Jack Prelutsky's Last Night I Dreamed of Chickens or Brian Patten's Mooning ('The Man in the Moon has lost his shoe'). Others, like Malachy Doyle's gift of the secret of The Dancing Tiger to a great-grandchild, are magical. And the final Rock Me verse by Nancy Willard, 'Rock me in the alphabet / and let the letters sing' speaks for the entire collection. You'll linger over both the lyrics (best read aloud) and the gorgeous detail and textures of the illustrations in this picture book. Lullaby Moons and a Silver Spoon is a keeper, the perfect bedtime companion.
