I
n this early reader series, Chris Williams focuses on special dogs and the special ways they help people. Kizzy, based on a real therapy dog, has been trained as a
Reading Education Assistance Dog
(R.E.A.D.). Along with her owner Judy, Kizzy visits many different kinds of people who, for various reasons, need extra assistance with their reading skills.
I
n the book, for example, Kizzy visits a stroke patient who is trying to regain her speech; a group of children for whom English is a second language; a child who stutters, and several others. Kizzy's mere presence relaxes those people who are having trouble reading: he is non-judgmental and does not tease anyone. The book promotes literacy in a positive way, and demonstrates the author's clear love and respect for animals and their powerful impact on humans.
W
hile the story is strong, it is greatly aided by the wonderful pencil drawings. Each illustrated page is framed by a jumbled, blue-tinged alphabet. The artist is quite skilled in rendering lifelike expressions, and Kizzy the dog is unbelievably realistic. In all, this is a nice easy reader book with a solid message.
