Down By the Bay
is one of many in a series of Raffi's
Songs to ReadŽ
. The song has been around for some time as part of American folk heritage, and youngsters (and oldsters) catch right on to the tune. The back of the book has a page of music, to learn how the verses are sung.

Down by the bay, where the watermelons grow, / Back to my home I dare not go. / For if I do my mother will say, / 'Did you ever see a goose kissing a moose,/Down by the bay?'
This is an excellent rhyme for older siblings to read to younger ones. And don't be shy about creating your own words to the tune! It can also be sung as a duet, one person singing the first verse, then the other singing the second.
