He played with her in the park, where she 'fluttered her wings happily'. But then Ming forgot and left her behind. Paper Butterfly grew more and more miserable waiting for Ming. Then a dragon 'came prancing by, with a long twisty body and sparkly scales.' The dragon offered to take Paper Butterfly home if she answered his question - 'what was made in China almost 2,000 years ago and is still used today?' Paper Butterfly seeks the answer from a carp in a pool, two stone lions, a Chinese family, three wise monkeys, and an army of clay soldiers. She travels to a heavenly mountain, the Forbidden City, the Great Wall of China, and Xian. Finally, she meets another butterfly like herself and asks him. Blue Butterfly gives her the answer and the duo fly back to Ming together on the dragon's back, in a charming ending. Interesting facts about Chinese life, history, and culture are annotated to the illustrations, such as that 'The Great Wall of China was built hundreds of years ago to keep the Mongolians out.' There's a map of China at the back of this informative picture book, as well as simple instructions to make your own paper butterfly and to write 'Paper Butterfly' in Chinese characters. Enjoy Made in China as a delightful fable and also an introduction to this 'huge, wonderful country'.
