love the goofy illustrations in this engaging

picture book,
If I Had a Dragon
. Morton's Mom tells him to play with his brother, but big brother doesn't want to - '
He's too little.
' Morton wishes his small sibling '
would turn into something fun
', like '
... a DRAGON!
'

ut then young Morton follows his imagination down the road of reality - in taking walks together, playing basketball, swimming, playing hide-and-seek, catching a movie, and whistling (just guess what happens when whistling dragon breath!) Morton concludes, '
I guess a dragon doesn't make a very good playmate after all
' and he settles for the one he has at hand.
W
hile
If I Had a Dragon
is a hilarious depiction of what the mythical creature might really be like as a playmate, it's also a good lesson in thinking things through - sometimes it's not really good to get what you wish for.
