Grace for an Island Meal is a children's poem written many decades ago by late author Rachel Field. A family is about to sit down and enjoy a meal together on a beautiful island on the coast of Maine. Surrounded by beauty, they give thanks for their bounty.

The poem is a celebration of nature and of life. The lyrics are short and simple, and they read, in part: 'Bless this board and bless this bread. Bless this skylight overhead through which any eye may see wheeling gull and blowing tree.'

Jabar's illustrations are bold and bright, cobalt blue being the dominant hue, representing the deep blue waters surrounding the Maine island. Her paintings show the exuberance and joy of the family gathered together for their meal. The simple watercolors reflect Fields' simple yet powerful poetry.
