Margaret Wise Brown's words are evocative of the myriad of fascinating details of a seashore, and Anne Mortimer's lovely illustrations make you feel that you can reach out and stroke Sneakers' lush black fur, or listen to the 'ocean's roar' in a sea shell. We learn, along with Sneakers, that 'boom, boom, boom was the sea pounding rocks way off shore, out on the ledges of the sea.' We look up, as he does, at the shadow of a big seagull, and are amused by his attempt at catching sand shrimps. We know what will happen when he stalks a crab, and empathize with how it feels to have sea spray on his tender nose, and to hear seaweed popping. Sneakers, the Seaside Cat brings to life all the sights and sounds of the seashore. Read it with little ones if you're planning a seaside vacation, are a catlover, or simply enjoy a well done and beautifully illustrated picture book.
