ith so many alphabet books on the market, it is hard to believe that there is room for one more, but
Shiver Me Letters
is unique and creative.
A
band of animal pirates is on a mission to capture the entire alphabet. They sail the high seas, finding, for example, a treasure chest with a glistening gold letter '
G
', a mysterious map with an '
M
' on it, and a life preserver doubling as an '
O.

T
he pirates find all the letters but one, and they return to the captain with their booty. '
They went to the captain expecting a thanks. They showed him the letters. He showed them the planks. "R" roared the captain. "Ye'll walk these for me. Be off with ye, mates. Go rob me a Z."

he book is very charming, never scary, and certain to appeal to young children, as well as teach them a thing or two about the alphabet. The comical, expressive illustrations add to the fun. My favorite is the pirate captain: a crocodile wearing a rubber ducky innertube.
