Babies on the Go. With many examples on each of its initial pages, this charming picture book begins by telling us that 'Some babies stand up right away. / They take a step, then run and play. / But many need more time to grow, / so they have other ways to go.' Little ones can identify with a variety of small creatures, from a tiny giraffe to a miniature bat and a polar bear cub. We see babies 'Rolling by in baby strollers' and also clinging to a mother monkey and a koala, a sloth and a swan. Babies are towed by a beaver and an elephant, or carried in the mouths of a lion and a crocodile. There's a kangaroo's pouch, an oppossum's back, and a bat's sheltering wing. And no matter how they go, we are reassured that 'On the ground or high above, babies always ride with love.' A 'Meet the Babies' page in the back is handy for those, like me, who aren't sure that they've identified all of them correctly. The animals and their young are lovingly illustrated, and the rhyming text introduces small readers to all kinds of other creatures, while reassuring them of the universality of parental love.
