Little Mamá is the pet name that the narrator, Lucy, has for her grandmother. 'My grandmother's name is a quiet morning song,' says Lucy. Lately, Lucy's grandmother has been rather forgetful. She forgets names, she forgets the bread in the toaster, and she even forgets how to tie her shoes. But Little Mamá always remembers that Lucy likes cream slathered on her rice pudding, she remembers to tickle Lucy, and she remembers how to skip. Little Mamá's memories of her past, are also sharp, and she often regales her family with tales of her own childhood, and shows Lucy how she and her husband used to dance.  Despite Little Mamá's failing memory, she has never forgotten the love she feels for her family. 'She forgets so many things she once knew. But my pretty grandma, my bonita abuelita, always remembers to tuck me in with a song and a kiss.' The vivid illustrations feature a loving Mexican-American family. Both the writing and the illustrations portray Little Mamá as a vibrant character rather than one who is lonely or depressed. The book is uplifting, despite the subject matter, and the pictures help the reader to focus on the positive message.
