The Lemon Sisters    by Andrea Cheng & Tatjana Mai-Wyss Order:  USA  Can Putnam, 2006 (2006) Hardcover     Reviewed by Hilary Daninhirsch The Lemon Sisters is unusual for a children's picture book because it is narrated from the perspective of an eighty-year old woman. The elderly woman is observing three little girls playing outside in the snow near her home, and they spark memories of the days when she and her two sisters, Rita and Mae, were children, especially when the three of them would make lemon ice in the snow. On this day, her birthday, the elderly woman's sisters surprise her with a visit. Soon, all three are frolicking in the snow with the three young girls, eating lemon ice just like they used to do, and celebrating the old woman's birthday. The author shows that the bonds of sisterhood never die, and that youth can be recaptured as long as you remain young at heart. The book is a sweet tribute to the elderly, presented in a way that is understandable to young readers. The watercolor drawings are detailed and inviting, and a special illustrative touch is the lemon ice recipe on the beginning and end pages.
