Mabel O'Leary Put Peas in Her Ear-y    by Mary Delaney & Kathy Couri Order:  USA  Can Little, Brown & Co., 2006 (2006) Hardcover     Reviewed by Hilary Williamson Mary Delaney gives us a funny story (in verse) of the lengths to which young Mabel O'Leary will go to avoid ingesting vegetables. The humor is accentuated by Kathy Couri's exaggerated illustrations (which include cute details like a framed sampler of 'Peas on Earth' and a goldfish waving a flag of truce after Mabel riots). It opens, 'Mabel O'Leary / was growing quite weary / of staring alone at her food. / Said Mother to Mabel, / "You'll sit at that table / until every pea has been chewed."' This smart kid finds a way to make those peas disappear as her dog looks on in horror. Unfortunately, the multitude of peas lodged in Mabel's ears make it very hard to hear what Mother says, leading to misunderstandings and chaos - the family cat looks on, unimpressed. The book closes as this mischievous girl deals with another vegetable - don't ask how! Kids, who love reading about other children's naughty behavior, will have great fun with Mabel O'Leary's misadventures, but I sure hope they don't emulate them!
