'Well, just as I'm leaving, I feel something in my heart. / I look inside. / And what do you think I find? / YOU! / Right here in my heart.' Mom continues to muse about her day, the places she goes and things she does - and the fact that, always 'You're in my heart. Plenty of room for YOU here!' Then she thinks about her child's day - 'yes, it's your turn now' - all the places and activities involved, while still 'You're in my heart then too, all the time.' Mom talks about the warmth and happiness that heart presence gives her. Her conclusion, 'Guess who's always in that great big heart of YOURS?', accompanies an illustration of a child's heart packed tight with friends and family. Molly Bang's text is unashamedly sentimental and heartwarming, while her illustrations take an interesting perspective, in which the page seems to enclose the reader - especially one displaying the day's end reunion of mother and child. In My Heart is one of those books that kids find tremendously reassuring - it reminds them how much they love and are loved, allows them to visualize their connection to a working mother through the day, and to appreciate how much time mom spends thinking about them.
