This is one of An I Can Read Book series (level 2, reading with help). Lee Bennett Hopkins selected the sweet (and only slightly scary) Halloween poems, while Stacey Schuett supplied spooky seasonal illustrations.

Virginia Kroll's 'Something's Coming' sets the mood nicely, followed by poems on preparations - carving pumpkins and picking costumes. Then we head into the darkness with Maria Fleming's 'Night Noises' to play 'The Best Trick' - Sandra Gilbert Brug tells us that 'Besides shouting, / "BOO!"', it's 'wearing a mask, / so neighbors will ask, / "Do we know / YOU?"'

Parents will especially appreciate Jane Yolen's 'On Halloween' that lists candy and concludes, 'Four candy apples, / A raisin cluster - / Halloween's a tummy buster.' But kids will enjoy reading and re-reading all these simple poems as they anticipate the tummy-busting holiday.
