Sharon Creech offers a selection of verses about a very new family member in Who's That Baby?, while David Diaz's warm illustrations show all kinds of happy infants, held close by family members or content in themselves.

The title poem explores a baby's nature, asking 'And what will you look like / and will you have hair / and will you be tall / or dark or fair?' Both sexes are addressed in Pearly Girl and Joy Boy, and many family members are included in the collection. Daddy tosses Football Baby, while Two Big Grandmas show limited vocabularies ('"Ooh!" and "Ahh!" / and "Aww!" and "Oh!"' and Grandpa 'holds me so gently / And whispers little things'. There's humor in Leaky Baby and Banana Baby. But my overall favorite is Books, in which 'They plop me on their laps / and open up the books / and read-read-read / in up-and-down voices.'

There's a great deal of love and empathy in Who's That Baby? It makes the ideal gift for a new parent or grandparent, and ends delightfully - 'Hold a baby / every day: / that will sweep / your woes away!'
