T
he remarkable boxed set in
Sing-Along Stories 3
includes three board books -
Mary Had a Little Lamb
,
Yankee Doodle
, and
Bill Grogan's Goat
- and a musical CD. Nadine Bernard Westcott's antic illustrations go perfectly with Mary Ann Hoberman's engaging additions to the traditional tales.
W
e learn everything that Mary's lamb did in its day at school - its reactions to the kids trying to teach it the first 2 R's are hilarious, and the teacher makes a good call. Yankee Doodle's horse Macaroni ends up carrying quite a crowd in this cute re-telling - the whole gang ends up opening a restaurant called '
Yankee Doodle's Noodles
'. And Goat takes a train trip, sharing Bill Grogan's regurgitated red shirts with the new animal friends that he makes on board - but he ends up an Indian giver in a symmetric ending that I loved.
T
he songs, which will be instant hits with the whole family, encourage singing along (kids already do the chorus in
Bill Grogan's Goat
, and the CD includes both song and music-only versions).
Sing-Along Stories 3
would make a very welcome gift for any occasion, from birthdays to seasonal holidays.
