You won't find Goldilocks, but you will find a fun ursine family in the reprint of two stories about The Fourteen Bears in Summer and Winter.

Father and Mother Bear live with their twelve offspring in hollow trees in a Summer forest. Too little to be alone, Theodore lives with Father and Mother. All of the other bears have their own trees. The inside decor varies from velvet couches to furniture with painted flowers, and one tree home is like a castle. Each day the family takes a walk through the forest, enjoying the summer air. They swim in a pool, and eat lots of honey in different flavors, including strawberry, and coconut.

When Winter arrives, the bears hibernate in their hollow tree homes. Little Theodore naps for only two months, as he doesn't know the meaning of hibernating and winter. All the family dress in warm clothing to go out in the snow and investigate what winter is like. At the edge of the forest, they find a large farmhouse. In the front yard is a snowman holding a sign that says, 'Welcome Neighbors. Gone to Grandma's. Make Yourselves at Home.' The bears enjoy winter activities, including skating, skiing, and sledding.

Evelyn Scott's simply told stories of the fourteen bears have entertained generations of youngsters (and adults) since their first publication in 1969. Virginia Parsons' illustrations are in rich colors, detailing touchable, expressive characters, and activities over two-page spreads, from cover-to-cover. For example, Bear Virginia stands at an easel painting a portrait of sister Ramona, while Henrietta sits on a stool reading a Ghost Story book. This Golden Books reprint is sure to delight both young and old.
