So opens Honey in a Hive, taking readers through the process by which bees collect nectar and pollen and take them back into a hive full of honeycombs. S. D. Schindler's illustrations show bees in their natural surroundings, as well as the structure of the hive. Anne Rockwell explains the roles of the queen, the drones, and worker bees in hive society. She tells us how worker bees dance to communicate the location of flowers, and how they die of exhaustion after about 400 flights. She discusses the making of royal jelly for young queen bees, and the old queen's flight (called a swarm) with workers and drones to build a new hive. Behind them, the young queens fight for the succession, and the survivor mates and lays eggs to fill the hive once more. Different types of honey are shown in their jars, made from the nectar of different kinds of flowers, and more bee and honey facts are listed at the back of the book.
