llustrator Ann Jonas complements April Pulley Sayre's charming creation with enticing bright colors on the book's cover and the pictures inside. Hues of green with brilliant orange on the first double-page put sparkles in a reader's eyes, as Sayre begins her story, '
At sunrise, the sun, low in the sky, peeks through dusty air.
'
S
ayre tells of dust that travels by way of a flower's pollen, on dog's fur, from bicycles and tractors, and from zebras and cheetahs too, as they travel across roads and meadows. Dust is new and old, and Sayre writes that '
Dust that made King Tut sneeze is still on Earth.
' It is a wondrous thing that dust falls from '
outer space
', spread by wind mixed with Mars and the moon, settling '
beneath your bed
'.
U
nder the heading '
Dust and Sunsets
', Sayre dedicates two pages at book's end to the make-up of dust. She writes, '
This evening some of this dust ... will color the sunset we see
' tomorrow. Sayre's over fifty children's books include
Dig, Wait, Listen: A Desert Toad's Tale
, awarded the Outstanding Science Trade Book for Children in 2002.
Stars Beneath Your Bed
is an adorable, cuddly, and informative book.
