His family is very musical - Mom plays the accordion, Dad the whistle, Tom the guitar, and Molly sings. Angus, the youngest, simply hums along. But, eventually, humming is not enough, 'it's not special' - Angus feels sad and left out. So his parents decide it's time for their youngest to choose his own instrument. That makes Angus feel like dancing, so he does, on the wharf 'between the ropes and the lobster traps and the nets and the anchors.' What to pick? He thinks about it. Angus spends time on the beach, listening to all the sounds - of waves and wind, sandpipers and seagulls, and 'the big red groaner buoy'. He can't decide. Then the family attend a ceilidh in another village, where all kinds of instruments are played. And the sound Angus hears from a fiddle is 'the wind and the waves and every happy thing.' In A Fiddle for Angus, Budge Wilson tells a warm, inclusive tale of a loving family and how hard it can be to be youngest, of the love of music and the discipline needed to learn to play it well. And Susan Tooke's paintings bring the seaside surroundings of Cape Breton to windswept life for the reader.
