Eyes and Ears    by Seymour Simon Order:  USA  Can HarperTrophy, 2005 (2003) Hardcover, Softcover Read an Excerpt      Reviewed by Hilary Williamson Seymour Simon does an excellent job of presenting science in a form palatable to young readers, and Eyes and Ears is no exception. I like his dedication 'To my grandchildren, who have opened up my eyes and ears once again'. Simon explains how light waves and sound waves enter the eye and ear, which send signals to the brain - 'We see and hear when our brain makes sense out of the messages it gets from our eyes and our ears.' He explains how teams of muscles swivel the eye, introduces the parts of the eyeball, and describes how the retina feeds information to the brain via the optic nerve. The illustrations are clear, including a picture of rods and cones in the retina, and one that identifies the 'blind spot'. Simple experiments are suggested, for example on how the brain sees and interprets color. Drawings demonstrate optical illusions. Parts of the ear are introduced, including illustrations of eardrums, ossicles, and cochlea. Balance is explained, as well as why whirling around makes you dizzy. Eyes and Ears provides a wonderful overview of vision and hearing for elementary school children, who might be able to teach their parents a thing or two once they read it.
