T
his small Board Book illustrates a popular traditional Spanish folk song '
Los Pollitos Dicen
' ('
The Baby Chicks are Singing
'), including the lyrics in both English and Spanish.
A
shley Wolff paints farmyard scenes and benevolent looking animals in warm colors, while hungry chicks sing ('
peep peep peep / pío pío pío
') as they follow the mother hen ('
la gallina
') outdoors in search of '
corn and wheat / el maiz y el trigo
'. Finally Mama Hen kisses and feeds her babies, and they sleep warmly under her wings in the barn, with many other critters cuddling nearby (I like the lonely mouse who seems to be looking at all of them in wonder).
S
mall children love young animals, and will identify with these chicks sheltering close to their mother, as all little ones do, exploring and eating and sleeping. And young readers just might learn some words of Spanish or English too, as they sing, cheep and peep along.
