I
n this Board Book version of the folksong,
Little White Duck
, the energy of Walt Whippo's lyrics and a touch of whimsy in Joan Paley's boldly patterned aquatic illustrations, keep the reader engaged and singing along (if only mentally).
T
he narrator is a little brown mouse on a branch overhanging the water. He opens,
There's a little white duck sitting in the water, / A little white duck doing what he oughter.'
It turns out that all the critters who star in this sing-a-long story are doing what they '
oughter
', that is following their natures. The happy little duck nibbles on a lily pad, making the '
little green frog
' leap off into the water, where she's tickled by the '
little black bug
'. Then the '
little red snake
' shows up, and he does what he '
oughter
' too.
K
ids will enjoy mimicking the sound effects, from '
QUACK! QUACK QUACK
' all the way to '
BOO! HOO! HOO!
', and it's very hard to get the phrase '
doing what he oughter
' out of your head. Enjoy reading, singing and yelling
Little White Duck
along with children; it's a board book they'll demand often.
