The Metropolitan Museum of Art brings us a counting book that integrates some of the world's best works of art, making Museum 123 a pleasure for both adult and child to read (and count) together. Kids love to explore detail in pictures and there's a delightful variety here, in content and style. It begins, 'How many unicorns rest in the garden?' beside The Unicorn in Captivity tapestry. The unicorn has one horn and on the next couple of pages we find the number one beside four other works of art that represent '1' of something. So it continues from 1 to 10 ('How many buttons decorate this fancy uniform?'), with an index to all the art displayed, in the back of the book. I love the two charging Indian elephants, five trapeze artists, eight vases in an Egyptian tomb painting, and ten fingers and thumbs in a study of a child's hand holding a doll. There is a Degas, a Monet, a Cézanne, art from India, China, Egypt, Japan, Iran and Taiwan. It's colorful and elegant and totally fascinating.
