This is a picture book rendition of a song by Woody Guthrie (1912 - 1967), New Baby Train. In it, a young guitar-playing folksinger answers kids' question, 'How do brand-new babies get into this house?' According to Guthrie, rather than the traditional stork, 'maybe the trains bring some.'

Guthrie proceeds to sing that train into being for us, and Marla Frazee's charming, old-style illustrations finish the job of bringing it before our eyes. We climb on board, along with babies, singer and 'Mister Conductor', and the engine and carriages speed along the rails singing, 'I wanna go faster!' After journeying 'Over a big high mountain' and through sky and clouds, we see that train 'let all the diapered babies off at their homes', lugging their luggage. And the singer gets off too - taking a new baby sibling by the hand - at his own home.

New Baby Train is a whimsical, joyous celebration of a new arrival. Read it together as you wait for your own baby to show up, or give it as a gift to an expectant family.
