T
his is a picture book rendition of a song by Woody Guthrie (1912 - 1967),
New Baby Train
. In it, a young guitar-playing folksinger answers kids' question, '
How do brand-new babies get into this house?
' According to Guthrie, rather than the traditional stork, '
maybe the trains bring some.
'
G
uthrie proceeds to sing that train into being for us, and Marla Frazee's charming, old-style illustrations finish the job of bringing it before our eyes. We climb on board, along with babies, singer and '
Mister Conductor
', and the engine and carriages speed along the rails singing, '
I wanna go faster!
' After journeying '
Over a big high mountain
' and through sky and clouds, we see that train '
let all the diapered babies off at their homes
', lugging their luggage. And the singer gets off too - taking a new baby sibling by the hand - at his own home.
N
ew Baby Train
is a whimsical, joyous celebration of a new arrival. Read it together as you wait for your own baby to show up, or give it as a gift to an expectant family.
