S
nug as a Bug
is one of those
feel-good
books that parents love to tuck kids in with at bedtime. It opens, '
It's time for a kiss. / It's time for a hug. / Get ready to sleep / as snug as a bug.
'
M
ichael Elsohn Ross's verses are charming, but what makes this picture book stand out are Sylvia Long's lovingly detailed, anthropomorphized renditions of baby bugs snuggling up in all kinds of natural bedrooms (check out the details on their PJ's). We see spiders and slugs, worms and caterpillars, and many more I couldn't identify. I love the '
huddle
' of ladybugs being read to by Mama, and a mushroom makes a soft bed for butterflies.
S
nug as a Bug
gives a much better bug bedtime message than the '
Don't let the bugs bite
' I used to tease my little ones with. It finishes sweetly with '
Rest cozy. / Nap happy. / Dream like a slug. / Get ready to sleep / as snug as a bug.
'
