The basics of blood science are introduced by Paul Showers via spooky Halloween characters (a vampire and a Frankenstein), and an engaging introductory verse: 'Oh, there's blood in your arms and legs, there's blood in your fingers and toes, and once in a while when a game gets too rough, you'll find that there's blood in your nose.'

Paul Showers suggests simple experiments that show where blood is in our bodies. He explains why blood is red; the appearance of red and white blood cells under a microscope; how blood circulates to transport food and oxygen through the body; the role of platelets in clotting; and how much blood our bodies hold. Edward Miller's illustrations mix monsters and anatomy.

The account ends with another delightful verse, and there are many more blood factoids at the back of the book, including advice on how to keep your heart healthy. A Drop of Blood is great edutainment; it makes science fun, answers many of the What's, Why's and How's that children ask, and will teach adults a thing or two.
