Frances Wolfe, who lives on the Nova Scotia shore, details that wish through the picture book, and finally assures us that 'Wishes can come true!' Her illustrations are bright and realistic. A little girl tells us everything about the yellow cottage by the sea, for which she yearns - the field of 'Queen Anne's lace' surrounding it, its sunny porch and pink roses, tea parties with a 'purr-fect guest', feeding 'greedy gulls' on the beach, scavenging for treasures left on the sand, playing in the waves, building sand castles, and listening to a spiral shell. My favorite page (which brought back my own childhood) shows the girl in an Arran sweater on a cold day listening 'to the thundering waves crash on rumbling, tunbling stones.' If you enjoy the ocean and days by the seaside, then you'll love reading this book with a child, and might even make one wish yourselves together.
