Impossible Places    by Alan Dean Foster Order:  USA  Can Del Rey, 2002 (2002) Paperback     Reviewed by Theresa Ichino The prolific Foster, who has several novels and novelizations to his credit, showcases his creativity in this collection of fantastic short stories. Anyone who has read his delightful Pip and Flinx adventures, or his Commonwealth stories featuring the thranx, will be familiar with Foster's lively imagination and quirkish humour. This collection does not disappoint. The stories run the gamut of an only too possible horror (Lay your Head on my Pilose), to the very satisfying The Kindness of Strangers, to the rather wistful Diesel Dream. Be warned, however, that Foster seems to enjoy puns and hoary jokes! The advantage of a collection by a single author is that one can be assured of the quality. A volume of stories by several different writers will vary in appeal. Foster is an entertaining writer with a diverse range of interests, and his introductory comments that preface each story give additional insights into his personality. Impossible Places is a nice grab-bag of entertainment for a busy day. If you haven't yet made the acquaintance of Mr. Foster, this collection is a good introduction to a writer who provides consistently good writing.
