T
hough I haven't encountered the
Toot & Puddle
series before, the delicate watercolor illustrations in
Charming Opal
enticed me in. Cute porcine characters Toot and Puddle live in Woodcock Pocket, and in this picture book, little piggy cousin Opal comes for a holiday.
T
hey have fun walking in the woods and playing ball, and at bedtime, Puddle notices that Opal is about to lose a tooth. It's wobbly the next morning, and, unfortunately, the '
loose tooth
' becomes a '
lost tooth
' after Opal jumps into Pocket Pond. Opal is upset since she wanted to leave it under her pillow for the Tooth Fairy, so Toot goes diving and saves the day. But then Puddle worries whether the Tooth Fairy will actually come to Woodcock Pocket, so decides to stay up to see.
K
ids will understand Opal's excitement about her loose tooth, while adults will empathize with the Tooth Fairy anxiety that Toot and Puddle feel, and with their caring and determination to make a little one happy. Charming Opal is a charmer.
