An Ordinary Sort of Evil follows Death at a Highland Wedding as the fifth in Kelley Armstrong's Rip Through Time adventures. The first sent modern homicide detective Mallory Atkinson into the body of housemaid Catriona Mitchell in 1869 Edinburgh.

She's lived since then in the home of undertaker/medical examiner and forensic-science pioneer Dr. Duncan Gray and his widowed sister Isla. Those aware of Mallory's true identity have grown to include both of them and Duncan's close friend Edinburgh police detective Hugh McCreadie. Mallory works as Duncan's assistant and she and Duncan now care deeply for one another.

As this episode begins Gray's patron Lady Adler summons them to her home one evening to participate in a seance whose ghost (former housemaid Nellie) demands that Gray investigate her murder. He and Mallory do so, though unsure whether she's really dead or alive. They soon find a corpse in circumstances similar to that of an earlier victim. As we expect, they solve the case.

The plot thickens when Queen Victoria summons Mallory and Duncan to Holyrood, revealing that she had clearly read the chronicles of their exploits and seeking an update on this one. They give it. Picknicking afterwards they share their feelings for each other - and plan big changes!
